About Virginia Phone Directory

Phone numbers for Virginia are scattered across a lot of separate lists. The Commonwealth publishes its agencies. Ninety-five counties and dozens of independent cities publish their own departments. School divisions, colleges, public libraries, hospital systems, and utilities each keep another one, and the area codes sit with NANPA and the FCC on top of all that. Finding one number often turns into a tour of six websites. This site exists so you can land on the right directory, area code reference, or hotline without that tour.

Why We Built This Site

Virginia spreads its phone information across a lot of offices, and the state's structure makes it worse than most. Independent cities sit outside any county, so the usual "call the county" advice fails in Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Alexandria, Roanoke, and a dozen more places. The State Employee Directory covers Commonwealth staff but needs a last name. The agency index covers offices but not people. School divisions publish separately from the Department of Education. Public safety splits across 911, 988, 211, and 311 where a locality runs one. Add ten area codes arranged in overlay pairs, and the picture gets crowded fast. This site gathers the lookup tools, the phone routes, and the numbering reference for each of those layers in one place.

What You Will Find Here

  • Virginia contacts: state agencies, counties and independent cities, school divisions, colleges, public libraries, utilities, courts, and public safety lines
  • Directory walkthroughs: how the State Employee Directory search works, how the school division staff directory is organized, and how to check an unknown caller against official Virginia sources
  • Numbering reference: the ten area codes serving Virginia, the overlay pairs, local exchange prefixes, N11 service codes such as 211, 311, 911, and 988, star codes, and toll-free prefixes

What We Cannot Do

This is a privately run reference site. We have no connection to any Virginia county or independent city, any Commonwealth agency, any school division, utility, telecommunications carrier, or directory operator. There are real limits to what we can help with:

  • We cannot place calls on your behalf or connect you to a department
  • We cannot change anyone's directory listing, add a number, or remove a listing
  • We cannot verify the identity of someone who called you
  • We cannot give legal advice or explain how a specific scam call applies to your situation
  • We cannot guarantee that every phone number, area code, or directory link on this site is current right now

Only the originating office can confirm a current phone number or change a listing. For emergencies, dial 911. For a mental-health or suicidal crisis, dial 988.
